ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 4 Northwestern, 1-0 in overtime, in non-conference play Monday afternoon (March 22) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' second Big Ten series split in as many weekends and their second overtime loss to a top-five team.
The Wildcats' Maddie Zimmer scored the game-winning goal late in the first overtime period, at 67:39, after carrying the ball into the circle from the right corner, getting loose and sending a reverse chip high into the cage.
Michigan was not without its own chances in overtime and played two minutes with an extra attacker after a Northwestern green card. The Wolverines denied a Wildcat corner soon after the card, got another overturned on referral, and charged down the field to draw one of their own just moments later. Sophomore Sarah Pyrtek's shot missed wide to the right of the cage.
Northwestern, which outshot the Wolverines, 19-12, with even corners (7-7), put the ball in the Wolverine cage in the third quarter, but the goal was taken off the board on referral due to a dangerously high ball coming across the circle.
Junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned six saves for Michigan, including a stellar charging stop in overtime, while Northwestern's Annabel Skubisz posted four stops for the shutout.
The Wolverines (3-2, 3-0 Big Ten) will remain at home to host Rutgers next weekend at Ocker Field, hosting the Scarlet Knights at 4 p.m. on Friday (March 26) and noon on Sunday (March 28). Both games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
