ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team earned a 1-0 shootout win against No. 10 Rutgers to stay unbeaten in Big Ten Conference play on Friday afternoon (March 26) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It was the Wolverines' first win in three overtime games this season and the program's first win in four shootouts over the last two seasons.
Junior Kathryn Peterson clinched the Michigan win in the fourth round of the shootout, faking a reverse chip to get Rutgers goalkeeper Gianna Glatz down on the turf before corralling the ball and hammering it into the open cage with just a second remaining on the clock.
After both teams scored on their first attempts, junior goalkeeper Anna Spieker did not allow another Rutgers shot to pass, making three consecutive stops on a stick save off an attempted aerial and back-to-back blocked shots into her chest padding and leg guards.
Junior Katie Anderson and freshman Lora Clarke also scored shootout goals for Michigan. Anderson led off with a shot right through the legs of Glatz, while Clarke knocked in a reverse chip to the nearside lower left corner.
Michigan narrowly outshot the Scarlet Knights, 7-6, while Rutgers posted a 2-1 edge in penalty corners. The Wolverines stopped both RU corners in the second overtime, blocking both ensuing shots -- the first with a foot before senior Halle O'Neill blocked the second and draw a foul on Rutgers to force the ball out of the circle.
The overtime corners proved the best scoring opportunity for the Scarlet Knights, while a fourth-quarter stroke -- called on a Michigan referral -- was the best chance in regulation for Michigan. Glatz made a diving save on stroke attempt from freshman Rosie Hope. Glatz earned two stops in the contest, while the Wolverines' Spieker similarly posted a pair of saves en route to her second shutout win of the season.
The Wolverines (4-2, 4-0 Big Ten) will wrap up their two-game set with Rutgers with the non-conference meeting at noon on Sunday (March 28) at Ocker Field. The game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
