STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team fell to No. 11 Penn State, 4-1, in a Sunday afternoon (March 21) match at Jeffrey Field. The Wolverines earned a split of their two-game road trip after defeating Maryland, 4-0, on Thursday (March 18).
The Wolverines struck first with Lily Farkas scoring her second goal in as many games, but it was all Penn State the rest of the way with four unanswered goals.
Michigan (4-2-2, 4-2-2 Big Ten) outshot the Nittany Lions, 17-11, putting nine on goal compared to seven for Penn State (6-1-1, 6-1-1 Big Ten).
The Wolverines were first to get on the scoreboard when Farkas fired a long shot up and into the upper-left corner of the net in the 11th minute, but PSU responded 30 seconds later, scoring on a penalty-kick opportunity to tie the game a 1.
The Nittany Lions followed with two more goals in the opening half to carry a 3-1 lead into the halftime break. Penn State tacked on a fourth goal in the 63rd minute to go up, 4-1.
The Wolverines looked to close the gap in the 70th minute when Meredith Haakenson fired a shot that was saved by a field player and Sarah Stratigakis followed it up with a shot on goal less than a minute later that was saved by the keeper as U-M continued to trail, 4-1.
Michigan could not find another the remainder of the game in taking the loss.
U-M will return to Ann Arbor to host Illinois on Thursday (March 25) at 2 p.m. for the first contest of the season at U-M Soccer Stadium.
