
Michigan to Continue Road Trip With Two-Game Weekend at No. 13 Indiana

The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (7-4) faces another stiff challenge away from home this weekend, facing No. 13 Indiana (8-2) in a two-game series in Bloomington. The two teams will play games at 11 a.m. on both Saturday (March 13) and Sunday (March 14) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Team Notes
• Entering its fourth weekend of competition, the Wolverines are 7-4 on the season. They took two of three in a hard-fought series against No. 16 San Diego State last weekend in San Diego. Two of those games went into overtime and all three games were decided by one goal.
• Michigan is ranked No. 8 in the latest CWPA Varsity Top 25 poll, released on March 10.
• Sophomore Anne Rankin was named CWPA Player of the Week on Wednesday (March 10). She tallied six points across the three games at San Diego State last weekend. [ Awards and Honors ]
• Senior Maddie O'Reilly is filling up the stat sheet so far this season, leading the team in shots (40), goals (16), assists (10) and field blocks (eight). She needs 11 goals to reach 100 for her career. Similarly, senior Sofie Pontré is just two points shy of 100 for her career.
• Wolverines who reached career milestones last weekend were senior Kathy Rogers (103 career points) and graduate student Heidi Ritner (200 career steals).
• Sophomore Anne Rankin had a breakout weekend against San Diego State. She recorded her first four-goal game in the second game of Michigan's doubleheader against the Aztecs, including a hat trick entirely in the second half.
• The Wolverines are locking up on defense in 6-on-5 situations, limiting opponents to an 8-for-76 clip (.105) on the power play. In the cage, Heidi Ritner leads the nation in steals (26) and is second in saves (65).
• Through 11 games, the centers have been effective near the net. Junior Erin Neustrom and freshman Libby Alsemgeest have combined for 21 goals and two assists. They've also drawn a total of 33 exclusions between them.
Opponent Preview
Indiana: The Hoosiers sit at 8-2 on the season and enter this weekend on two weeks' rest. They last played against Salem on Feb. 27, winning the two games by a combined score of 41-11. The Hoosiers have three players ranked in the top 10 in goals: Izzy Mandema (second, 33), Tina Doherty (sixth, 25) and Zoe Crouch (T-eighth, 21). Crouch is also ranked second in assists (25).
The Wolverines are 41-16-1 all-time against Indiana, and won both meetings with the Hoosiers at the Michigan Invitational last month.
