
Michigan Runs Past Penn State for Fifth Straight Win

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team continued its stellar start to Big Ten action, winning its fifth straight in a 5-2 victory over Penn State on Friday afternoon (Feb. 26) at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.
It was all Michigan on the doubles court as the Wolverines raced out to early leads on all three courts to take early control. U-M won the first point of the match for the fifth straight match, getting wins at Nos. 2 and 3.
U-M's No. 2 pair of graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Jaedan Brown breezed to a 6-1 win as the first match off court to put the Wolverines on the brink of the match's first point.
Michigan held concurrent 5-1 leads at both No. 1 and No. 3, but Penn State cut into both leads. PSU won three straight games to close within a game, 5-4, at No. 1 and won two straight at No. 3 to cut the U-M lead to 5-3.
The Wolverine pair of freshmen Gala Mesochoritou and Kari Miller clinched the point for the Wolverines, winning the next game for a 6-3 victory at No. 3.
With four courts available at Penn State, the top four matches went on court to start, with No. 5 and No. 6 to follow at the first available courts.
Miller accounted for Michigan's second point of the afternoon, coming through with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top spot. After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first en route to a 6-4 win, Miller found herself in a similar hole in the second. The freshman stayed composed and ripped off five straight games for the triumph.
Penn State cut Michigan's lead in half with a win at No. 3.
Senior Alyvia Jones nudged Michigan's lead to 3-1 behind a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4. Jones used an early break at 3-1 in the first to cruise to the 6-2 win, before getting the break she needed at 4-2 in the second to wrap up her fourth consecutive singles win.
Lommer clinched the Michigan win behind a 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. The lefty used a 5-0 advantage in the first to wrap up the 6-2 win. She was down 5-4 in the second but won the final three games to put U-M's fourth point on the scoreboard.
With the team match in hand, Mesochoritou came through with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5.
Penn State collected a win in the final match on court to provide the 5-2 margin.
Michigan concludes a four-match road swing Sunday (Feb. 28), traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to face No. 8-ranked Ohio State at noon.
