COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman Kari Miller came through in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 to help the University of Michigan women's tennis team rally for a 4-3 win over No. 8-ranked Ohio State Sunday afternoon (Feb. 28) at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
Michigan dropped the doubles point before rallying in singles action. U-M got straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6, with Miller converting in a third set to give Michigan its first win over a ranked team this season.
Ohio State took the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
The teams split the first sets in singles action, each winning three.
Sophomore Andrea Cerdan was first off court, winning a 6-1, 6-2 match at No. 4 to even the team score at 1-1. She broke early for a 3-1 lead in the first and never looked back for the win. In the second, she once again used an early break to coast to the straight-set win.
Senior Alyvia Jones pushed Michigan's lead to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. Jones broke on a deuce point for a 2-1 lead in the first and did not look back. In the second, Jones got the break she needed at 3-2 and backed it up in the following game. Once again, that was all the space she needed as she wrapped up her fifth straight win.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou put U-M's third point on the board, pushing the Wolverine advantage to 3-1 with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6. Both sets followed a familiar script for the Wolverine freshman as she took advantage of late breaks in each set to get the victory.
At No. 5, freshman Jaedan Brown came back from a first-set loss to win a 6-2 second set to split her match. She fell in an early hole in the third and could not recover, as Ohio State closed Michigan's lead to 3-2 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win.
Graduate student Chiara Lommer extended her match at the second spot multiple times before falling in a second-set tiebreaker, allowing Ohio State to knot the team score at 3. Lommer fought off a match point on a deuce point at 5-4, tying the second set at 5-5. She eventually forced the breaker to stay on court next to Miller as she entered a tiebreaker, but the lefty fell, 7-1, to account for OSU's third point.
Miller came through with a gritty 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 1 to clinch the team match for U-M. After dropping her first set, Miller rebounded for a 6-2 second-set win to send her match to a third set.
The Wolverine freshman raced out to a 5-2 lead in the final set and held a match point on a deuce point but netted the backhand as Irina Cantos Siemers began mounting a comeback. Miller lost her service game to go down a break at 6-5, but she broke right back and cashed in on her third break point to send it to a breaker for the match.
It was all Miller in the tiebreaker, as she never trailed and won seven of nine points to wrap up the 7-2 win and give Michigan the road win.
U-M returns to the Varsity Tennis Center next weekend, first hosting Illinois on Saturday (March 6) at noon.
