The University of Michigan women's tennis team (6-1, 6-0 Big Ten) returns to the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time in three weeks, hosting Illinois (1-4, 1-4 Big Ten) on Saturday (March 6) at noon and No. 7-ranked Northwestern (9-1, 6-0 Big Ten) on Sunday (March 7) at 11 a.m.
Wolverine Bites
• U-M returns to the Varsity Tennis Center for the first time in three weeks, hosting Illinois (March 6) and No. 7 Northwestern (March 7). It will be the lone meeting of the season between the Wolverines and Illini, with U-M slated to play at Northwestern on April 11.
• Michigan is tied with Northwestern atop the Big Ten standings with a 6-0 record. U-M has now won 20 straight regular-season conference matches, with its last loss coming to the Wildcats (4-3) on April 8, 2018. The Big Ten schedule consists of 16 matches this season.
• The Wolverines are 2-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center this season, surrendering just two points over the two matches. After this weekend, U-M will not be at home again until March 26. U-M will play four of its final five matches of the season at the VTC.
• Freshman Kari Miller was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after clinching Michigan's 4-3 win at No. 8 Ohio State on Sunday (Feb. 28) with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) win over No. 78 Irina Cantos Siemers. Miller is now 7-2 overall in singles, with a 4-2 dual-match mark.
• U-M is facing a ranked team for the second straight weekend in No. 7 Northwestern. The Wolverines got their first win over a ranked foe last time out, knocking off No. 8 Ohio State in Columbus (Feb. 28). Michigan is 1-1 against ranked teams this season.
• The Wolverines are now 5-0 when winning the doubles point this season and picked up their first win of the season without the match's first point last time out. Graduate student Chiara Lommer and freshman Jaedan Brown combine for a 7-0 overall record and a 4-0 dual-match mark to pace the Wolverines.
• U-M is off to a 6-0 start in Big Ten action and has outscored its opponents, 34-8. The Wolverines are 29-7 in singles play against Big Ten teams so far this season, with Alyvia Jones and Gala Mesochoritou each leading the way at 5-0.
• U-M features a pair of ranked singles players in No. 71 Andrea Cerdan, who earned All-Big Ten honors last year, and No. 101 Alyvia Jones.
• Illinois (1-4, 1-4 B1G) got its first win of the season last time out, knocking off Minnesota at home (4-3). The Illini have one ranked singles player in No. 107 Asuka Kawai. Michigan last squared off against Illinois in a non-conference match at the 2020 ITA National Team Indoor Championship, earning a 4-1 win over the Illini.
• No. 7-ranked Northwestern (9-1, 6-0 B1G) will compete at Michigan State prior to coming to Ann Arbor. The Wildcats have one ranked singles player in No. 57 Julie Byrne, who also pairs with Hannah McColgan to form the No. 47-ranked doubles team. U-M swept a pair of matches with the Wildcats during the 2018-19 season, winning, 6-1, during the regular season and grabbing a 4-1 victory during the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
Last Time Out
U-M ran its win streak to six matches with a 5-2 win at Penn State (Feb. 26) and a 4-3 win at No. 8 Ohio State (Feb. 28).
