WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Big Ten Championships for the University of Michigan men's and women's divers continued Friday (Feb. 26) at Purdue's Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The men competed on three-meter springboard, while the women competed on platform. Points scored at the diving meet will be combined into the team scores at the respective swimming championship sites.
Women
All six Michigan divers scored on the platform, led by a quartet who made the consolation final. Senior Christy Cutshaw topped the group with a 10th-place finish (257.30), followed by sophomore Lucy Hogan, who had another strong day in 11th (243.05). Senior Nikki Canale was 14th (211.55), and junior Allie Klein placed 16th (189.45).
In addition, sophomore Lauren Cheetham was 18th (204.50) and senior Camryn McPherson tied for 19th (203.85).
The six divers added 69.5 points to the team total on Friday, giving them 109 points with one day of competition to go.
"The trend continues," said diving coach Mike Hilde. "Together, this is a strong and powerful group, and they are proving here that they can score. It was great to see them sticking together as a team, supporting each other, and scoring points collectively."
Men
Senior Ross Todd was on the right side of qualifying yesterday for one-meter but was on the opposite side Friday, coming one spot shy of making the three-meter final. Despite the disappointment, Todd held his seed, won the consolation final and took ninth overall (382.60). He needed a 78.55 on his final dive to pass Wisconsin's Tazman Abramowicz for the win and got it, hitting an 81.60 on his 5154B.
Senior Chris Canning finished 29th (249.80). Through two days, Todd and Canning have scored 62 points for the team.
"The guys struggled through a tough preliminary rond today," said Hilde. "But the grit and desire that Ross showed to go out there and perform, he wasn't going to let one setback stop him."
