WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Big Ten Championships for the University of Michigan men's and women's divers wrapped up on Saturday (Feb. 27) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The men competed on platform, while the women competed on one-meter. Points scored will be combined into the team scores at the respective swimming championship sites.
Women
The Wolverines continued to showcase their depth, as five divers scored on one-meter. Senior Nikki Canale made the final for the second consecutive year, finishing fifth (306.95), while sophomore Lucy Hogan capped off a breakout week with her first 'A' final, taking seventh (305.25).
Other scorers included sophomore Lauren Cheetham (15th, 273.15), junior Allie Klein (16th, 269.75) and senior Camryn McPherson (18th, 263.00).
"They struggled a tiny bit yesterday, but I'm really proud of how they rallied as a group," said diving coach Mike Hilde. "This was our best day with two in the final and two in the consolation final. It shows that nothing is going to stop us. We came here to put points on the board and that's what we did."
For the course of the meet, the six women's divers scored 187 points, including 78 on Saturday.
Men
Senior Ross Todd battled to make his second event final of the competition, holding the seventh spot out of the preliminaries. He moved up one spot in finals, finishing sixth (371.65). He scored top-10 finishes in each event at the meet.
He notably did not do his full 10-meter list, but did just enough, scoring a 62.35 on his final dive from the five-meter platform to secure his spot. Todd had never executed those five-meter dives in a collegiate meet before today.
Senior Chris Canning wrapped his weekend with a 17th-place finish (265.05)
"I think it's a testament to what they have gone through this year," said Hilde. "To do what Ross did today showed incredible toughness. Even though he wasn't feeling 100 percent, he gave it his all."
Over the course of the meet, Todd and Canning scored 95 points for the team, which will be factored into the team race before swimming begins on Tuesday (March 2) in Columbus, Ohio.
The divers will next be in action for the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, March 7-9 in Lexington, Ky. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. each day.
