WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis ran its winning streak to four with its second shutout of the season, knocking off Purdue, 7-0, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 21) at Schwartz Tennis Center.
Michigan once again found success on the doubles court for the fourth straight match, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the first point of the match. It was all Michigan on both courts, as the Wolverines raced out to 4-1 leads in the two matches.
At No. 2, senior Alyvia Jones and sophomore Andrea Cerdan wrapped up a 6-1 win before senior Bella Lorenzini and freshman Kari Miller clinched the match's first point with a 6-2 win at No. 3.
Michigan took five of six first sets in singles action.
Jones was first off court for U-M, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win. Freshman Jaedan Brown earned her team-leading fifth dual match of the season, winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 to push Michigan's lead to 3-0.
Cerdan clinched the match for the Maize and Blue behind a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Miller bounced back from a tough loss at Indiana yesterday (Feb. 20) to record a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 for Michigan's fifth point. Sophomore Nicole Hammond won her first dual match of the season, coming through with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 win at No. 6.
At the top spot, graduate student Chiara Lommer kept Michigan perfect on the afternoon. She rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (7) victory, her first at No. 1 this season.
Michigan will continue its road swing next weekend, first traveling to Penn State Friday (Feb. 26) for a 2 p.m. match.
