Michigan Shuts Out Visiting Rutgers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season in dominating fashion, shutting out Rutgers, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan struck first, taking the doubles point behind wins at No. 3 and No. 1.
U-M raced out to 5-1 leads on both courts before Rutgers mounted comebacks on both courts. Michigan's No. 3 pairing of senior Alyvia Jones and sophomore Andrea Cerdan came through first, grabbing a 6-4 win after Jones held serve in Michigan's second attempt to serve out the match.
With U-M's lead at No. 1 down to 5-4 after a three-game streak for Rutgers, Michigan's No. 2 pairing of senior Bella Lorenzini and freshman Kari Miller fought off a match point to tie the match at 5-5 and stay on court.
The Wolverines came through moments later at No. 1, with freshman Jaedan Brown and graduate student Chiara Lommer winning, 6-4. With the game tied at 30-30, Michigan won the final two points to wrap up the win and put the first point on the scoreboard.
It was all Michigan in singles as the Wolverines did not drop a set to the Scarlet Knights in the sweep.
Freshman Gala Mesochoritou won the first dual match of her career and ran her overall singles record to 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5. Mesochoritou was in a 3-1 hole in the second set before ripping off five straight games to account for U-M's second point of the afternoon.
Miller was next off court for the Wolverines, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1. She went up a break at 3-2 in the first and never looked back, cruising to the straight-set win.
Brown clinched the match for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4. Brown won the first nine games of the match en route to her second dual-match win of the season.
Freshman Merri Kelly was the next victorious Wolverine, grabbing a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6 in the first dual-match action of her career.
Jones accounted for Michigan's sixth point of the match, winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Jones took advantage of a late break in the first set before racing out to a 5-1 lead in the second. After Sydney Kaplan held serve at 5-2, Jones served out the match in the next game for her first win of the season.
Lommer kept the Wolverines perfect on the afternoon, winning 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2. Lommer was in a 4-2 hole in the second set but won the final four games to win in straight sets. After tying the set at 4-4, Lommer got the break and backed it up in the next game at love to get the victory.
Michigan will continue Big Ten action on Sunday (Feb. 14), hosting Maryland at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
