
Wolverines Secure Three NCAA 'A' Cuts on Day Two of Minnesota Invite

» Maggie MacNeil picked up NCAA 'A' cuts in the 50-yard freestyle (21.60) and in the 100-yard backstroke (50.33), the latter of which was achieved on the leadoff leg of the 400-yard medley relay.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team picked up three NCAA 'A' cuts on the second day of the Minnesota Invitational on Thursday (Dec. 2) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Senior Maggie MacNeil punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 50-yard freestyle (21.60) and in the 100-yard backstroke (50.33), the latter of which came leading off the 400-yard medley relay. That relay also qualified for NCAAs, as MacNeil, freshman Letitia Sim, senior Olivia Carter and freshman Lindsay Flynn were clocked at 3:27.22, nearly four full seconds under the NCAA 'A' standard.
The 500-yard freestyle saw sophomore Kathryn Ackerman touch in 4:43.09 to finish fourth and register an NCAA 'B' cut. Freshman Kathryn Shanley (4:44.47), juniors Kaitlynn Sims (4:45.62) and Sophia Kudryashova (4:46.18) also notched 'B' cut times, as Shanley and Sims finished first and third in the consolation heat and ninth and 11th overall, while Kudryashova touched first in the D - Final.
Michigan sprinted its way to a 1-2-8 finish in the 50-yard freestyle behind MacNeil, whose 21.60 is the second-best time in program history. Flynn turned in a 22.21 to finish second, improving her odds of making it to the NCAA Championships with the 'B' cut. Sophomore Claire Newman was eighth (22.56).
Sim's showing in the 200-yard IM (1:55.99) was good for fourth in the championship heat and marked the fourth-best time in program history.
Two divers posted NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores on one-meter. Senior Allie Klein led the way with a third-place finish (308.20), followed by junior Lucy Hogan in fourth place (283.90). Freshman Evie Johnson turned in a 248.85 to finish seventh.
The Minnesota Invite continues Thursday (Dec. 2) with a full slate of events. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. CST with finals following at 6 p.m.
