
Wolverines Secure Three NCAA 'A' Cuts on Third Day at Minnesota Invite

» Maggie MacNeil picked up another NCAA 'A' cut and became the only woman in college swimming to break the 50 second mark in the 100-yard butterfly (49.97).
» MacNeil, Claire Newman, Olivia Carter and Lindsay Flynn got an NCAA 'A' cut in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.64), winning the championship heat and surpassing the standard by nearly a full second.
» Diver Allie Klein placed second on the three-meter springboard with a score of 314.20.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Senior Maggie MacNeil and the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team had another strong day at the Minnesota Invitational on Friday (Dec. 3) at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. MacNeil became the first collegiate woman to break 50 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly and went on to secure two NCAA 'A' cuts.
MacNeil topped all the competition by more than a full second in the 100 fly, touching first in 49.97. She also combined with sophomore Claire Newman, fellow senior Olivia Carter and freshman Lindsay Flynn to win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:27.64). With a neck-and-neck race to the final swimmer, Flynn turned in a 21.71 to give Michigan the victory.
Four other Wolverines picked up NCAA 'B' qualifiers in the 100-yard butterfly, as Carter (51.54) took fourth in the A final, freshman Letitia Sim (52.90) finished ninth, sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (53.12) took 13th and freshman Natalie Kan (53.27) finished 14th.
Sophomore Kathryn Ackerman picked up a 'B' cut in the 400-yard IM, taking third in the A final with a career-best 4:07.42. Junior Sophia Kudryashova picked up a 'B' cut of her own in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing the A final in 1:46.52. Fellow juniors Megan Glass (1:46.52) and Katii Tang (1:47.06) also registered NCAA 'B' cuts.
Sim's performance in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.06) A final was good for second overall and marked the third-best time in Michigan annals.
Sophomore Casey Chung marked the final individual to register an NCAA 'B' cut as she finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke with a 53.33. Junior Mariella Venter (54.08) and sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (54.15) placed 12th and 13th, respectively, in the event.
Senior diver Allie Klein once again posted an NCAA Zone diving qualifying score, turning in a 314.20 on three-meter on Friday. Her score was good for second place.
The Minnesota Invite concludes Saturday (Dec. 3) with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. CST and finals following at 6 p.m.
