EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Gavin Young of the University of Michigan men's tennis team captured the singles crown and the doubles team of Jacob Bickersteth and Patrick Maloney was the runner-up at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championships on Sunday (Nov. 7) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The championship began on Thursday (Nov. 4) with doubles play, and Bickersteth/Maloney quickly made themselves known. After earning a bye in the first round, the duo topped Northwestern's Trice Pickens and Felix Nordby 6-4 and then Michel Andre and Carson Haskins (Indiana) 6-4 in the next two rounds. On Friday (Nov. 5), the Michigan duo cruised to a 6-3 win over Piotr Galus/Michal Wozniak (Purdue) in the semifinal to advance to Sunday's final. This morning, the Wolverines suffered their first loss of the season, a 6-4 setback in the championship match against Brian Berdusco and Simen Bratholm of Northwestern.
Bickersteth and Maloney will head into the spring season with a 5-1 record as a formidable pair for the Wolverines.
Three of the four Wolverine participants received first-round byes in singles, including Young. On Friday, he took down Mihailo Popvic (Wisconsin) with matching 6-3 scores. On Saturday, Young defeated Nic Meister (Michigan State) 6-2, 6-2 on his home court. Facing Presley Thieneman of Northwestern in the quarterfinal round, Young won 7-5, 6-4. In the semifinal on Sunday, Young was challenged by Indiana's Ilya Tirapolsky, and Young won the first 6-1 and Tirapolsky the second 7-6. Young finished him off in a 10-3 tiebreaker victory. In the championship, Young was able to exact some revenge for Bickersteth and Maloney, toppling Northwestern's Bratholm 7-6, 6-1 for the crown. As the fall season comes to a conclusion, Young records a 9-2 singles mark.
Maloney also reached the quarterfinals in singles. After his Wisconsin opponent retired due to injury in the first-round match, Maloney claimed wins over Josh Mukherjee (Michigan State) 6-2, 6-3 and Felix Nordby (Northwestern) 7-5, 6-2. Facing Siophosothando Monti (Illinois) in the quarterfinals, Maloney himself retired with an injury.
Bickersteth split his singles matches, both against Wildcats. He defeated Berducso 6-3, 6-2 in the second round before dropping a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 match versus Bratholm in the third round.
Nick Beaty fell to Max Sheldon (Michigan State), 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.
With the fall season completed, the Wolverines will next be in action on Sunday, Jan. 16, when they host Virginia Tech for a dual at the Varsity Tennis Center.
