EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Freshman Chance Lamer captured the 141-pound crown in his collegiate debut as the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team posted six total placewinners at the annual Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 6) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.
Lamer went 4-0 in the open division and earned a decisive 10-4 win over Cal Poly's Lawrence Saenz with four takedowns off single-leg attacks, including two in the third period, and 1:39 in riding-time advantage. He also earned bonus points with a 15-5 major decision over Oklahoma's Zach Zeamer in the first round before taking back-to-back wins by way of medical forfeit. Lamer is the third Wolverine true freshman to win his collegiate debut over the past three events; Will Lewan (157) and Mason Parris (Hwt) captured individual titles in 2018.
Graduate student Patrick Brucki, ranked eighth nationally by FloWrestling, also reached the open-division finals at 197 pounds, where he dropped a 4-2 decision against Oklahoma's sixth-ranked Jakob Woodley in overtime. Brucki came within one second of securing riding-time advantage with a hard third-period ride -- and the clock showed 1:00 before the officials shaved off a second to send the bout to sudden victory, where Woodley finished on a scramble on the edge for the winning takedown. Brucki went 5-1 in his Michigan debut, earning two major decisions and a fall in the preliminary rounds.
Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin and graduate student Drew Mattin both placed at 133 pounds, with Ragusin claiming the head-to-head meeting 15-2, in the consolation semifinals. Ragusin went 4-2 on the day and narrowly fell to Illinois' fifth-ranked Lucas Byrd 5-2 on a first-period takedown and riding time to place fourth. Mattin posted a 3-2 mark and closed out the tournament with an 8-4 decision over Wisconsin's 24th-ranked Kyle Burwick with three takedowns and two back points.
Sophomore/freshman Chris Kim and freshman Zack Mattin placed top-three at 133 and 149 pounds, respectively, in the freshman/sophomore division. Kim dropped a close 2-0 decision to Ohio State's Andre Gonzalez -- on a second-period rideout and escape in the third -- in the championship match, while Mattin bounced back to place third in his collegiate debut, posting a 4-1 record and using an arm bar to pin Wisconsin's Aidan Medora at 52-second mark of his third-place bout.
The Wolverines will kick off the dual-meet portion of their 2021-22 slate next Sunday (Nov. 14), hosting Cal State Bakersfield at 1 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Season and individual match tickets are available through the U-M ticket office.
