ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team kicked off its 2021-21 dual season in electric fashion, cruising to a 39-3 win over CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 14) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines claimed nine individual bouts with six bonus wins, including two pins at the upperweights.
Senior/junior Max Maylor and graduate Patrick Brucki both used cradles to score first-period falls at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively. Maylor countered a leg attack by Bakersfield's Albert Uriah to cinch a cradle to collect the fall at 1:29 in his first bout of the season. Brucki, ranked 10th and in his dual-meet debut for Michigan, poured on the points early, scoring four takedowns, including a feet-to-back double off the opening whistle, before pinning Mateo Morales at the 2:20 mark. Sophomore/freshman Dylan Ragusin also earned six team points with a forfeit win at 133 pounds.
Graduate student Kanen Storr and sophomore/freshman Fidel Mayora earned back-to-back major decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to extend the Wolverine lead before the intermission. Storr, ranked 17th nationally, scored eight takedowns, including four in the first period, and rode for 2:18 en route to a 17-6 win over Josh Brown. Mayora, in his dual debut, scored five takedowns to defeat Brock Rogers, 12-4, including a high crotch with less than five seconds in the third period to seal the bonus win.
Fifth-year senior Jelani Embree also earned a major decision with a 13-3 win over Jacob Hansen at 184 pounds. He scored three takedowns -- one per period -- and broke it open with a four-point leg turk late in the second period. He accumulated 2:11 in riding-time advantage.
Fifth-year senior Jack Medley, ranked 23rd at 125 pounds, claimed a wild one in the opening bout, snatching an early lead before rallying past Eddie Flores 15-9 with a pair of third-period reversals and 1:04 in riding time. Medley scored two takedowns on a first-period dumps but was reversed to his back early in the second period. He reversed Flores back and used a four-point tilt to reclaim the lead before icing it in the third.
Junior/sophomore Cameron Amine, ranked 11th, restarted the dual with a 5-2 decision over Augustine Garcia at 165 pounds -- with a pair of single-leg takedowns in the first period, while junior/sophomore Blake Querio closed it out with a 5-3 overtime decision against Jake Andrews in the final bout at heavyweight. He used riding time to force sudden victory, then finished on a single leg 33 seconds into the extra frame for his first collegiate dual win.
Michigan (1-0) hits the road next for a pair of non-conference duals in the Empire State. U-M will face Columbia at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 19) in New York City, before wrapping with a 1 p.m. dual at Buffalo on Sunday (Nov. 21).
