The North Carolina Tar Heels
• North Carolina (4-2) began its season with three straight victories -- Loyola Maryland (83-67), Brown (94-87) and at the College of Charleston (94-83), before the Tar Heels fell to #6 Purdue (93-84) and #17 Tennessee (89-72) in the Hall of Fame Tipoff. In its last game before Thanksgiving, UNC defeated UNC Asheville (72-53).
• UNC averages 83.2 points per game, 40.5 rebounds and 14.5 assists. The Tar Heels are shooting nearly 50 percent (48.7%), in addition to 41.4 percent from deep -- which accounts for over a third of the UNC offensive shots.
• Junior Armando Bacot leads the Tar Heels with a near double-double average with 15.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. He has three double-doubles, leads the team with 11 blocks and is shooting 66.7 percent.
• Sophomore Caleb Love is averaging 15.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and a team-best 4.2 assists. Graduate student Brady Manek, who was a four-year starter at Oklahoma, posts 14.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Manek is tied for the team lead with 13 3-pointers with sophomore R.J. Davis (13.7 points and 4.0 assists).
• Hubert Davis is in his first year leading the Tar Heels. He was named head coach following the retirement of legendary coach Roy Williams who collected over 900 wins and three NCAA championships. Davis was an assistant coach on Williams' staff for nine years (2012-21).
• Davis played in 137 games in his UNC career (1988-92), compiling a record of 102-37, and helped win the 1989 and 1991 ACC Tournaments. He also played in the 1991 Final Four, scored 1,615 career points and went on to play 12 NBA seasons.
• While they never played with each other in the NBA, Howard and Davis were connected in a trade during the 2001-02 season as Howard was sent to the Dallas Mavericks and Davis landed with the Washington Wizards.
Michigan in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge
• Michigan is set to make its 20th appearance in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Wolverines have an 8-11 record in the series, with a 3-7 record in road or neutral games. North Carolina is 10-12 in the Challenge with a 5-5 home record.
• Wednesday's game will mark the third time in the last five years that the Wolverines face the Tar Heels in the Challenge. The series is tied, 1-1. The contest will mark the fourth meeting overall in the last five years, as U-M also squared off with the Tar Heels in the 2019 Battle 4 Atlantis semifinal.
• Last year, U-M was scheduled to host N.C. State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, however, the game was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols within the Wolfpack program. Instead, U-M hosted nearby Toledo, winning 91-71.
