ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team took down Oakland 174-117 in a season-opening dual meet Saturday (Oct. 9) at Canham Natatorium.
With eight swimmers and diver Allie Klein in action at the SMU Classic in Dallas, a mix of experienced and new faces combined to lead the Wolverines to victory.
The meet started with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as sophomore Noelle Kaufmann, junior Mariella Venter, sophomore Natalie Kan and sophomore Claire Newman won in 1:41.90.
Venter also took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.79, and Newman took first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. Newman touched the wall in 23.21 seconds in the 50, and tied for first with freshman Abbey Ketslakh in the 100 in a time of 51.25.
Freshman Kathryn Shanley showed her strength in the distance races, winning both the 1,000- and 500-yard freestyle events. Her 10:07.25 in the 1,000 was a full seven seconds faster than the second-place finisher, while she bested the rest of the field by nearly 13 seconds in the 500 with her 4:58.92.
Also picking up multiple wins was junior Katii Tang, who won the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.88) and 100-yard fly (54.98). Junior diver Lucy Hogan turned in the top performances on both the 1- and 3-meter dives, finishing with scores of 287.63 and 314.40, respectively.
The Wolverines also had success in the middle distances, winning both the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke. Junior Madeleine Bauer took the 200 free in 1:50.56 while sophomore Kalli Fama won the 200 back in 2:01.37.
Michigan ended the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay with junior Sophia Kudryashova, teaming with Ketslakh, Bauer and Newman to touch the wall in 3:27.51.
Michigan will return to action on Friday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. when they take on Missouri and Purdue at the Boilermakers' November Triple Dual in West Lafayette, Ind.
