The University of Michigan men's and women's swimming and diving teams officially open the 2021-22 season this weekend, as part of the team participates in the two-day SMU Classic on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 8-9) in Dallas, Texas, while the rest stay home to host Oakland on Saturday (Oct. 9) at Canham Natatorium.
The SMU Classic begins at 6 p.m. CDT Friday night, with Saturday's (Oct. 9) action in Dallas will begin at 11 a.m. CDT. Both days will be streamed live on SMU's PonyUp TV. Meanwhile, Michigan's home dual with the Golden Grizzlies begins at noon.

Team Notes
• The SMU Classic features eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1 and 3 meter.
• Michigan will send swimmers Patrick Callan, Will Chan, Jared Daigle, Wyatt Davis, Gal Groumi, Jake Mitchell, Cam Peel and Bora Unalmis, with Ross Todd slated to do the diving.
• On the women's side, Kathryn Ackerman, Casey Chung, Lindsay Flynn, Megan Glass, Victoria Kwan, Maggie MacNeil, Letitia Sim and Kaitlynn Sims will swim, and Allie Klein will dive.
2020-21 Review
• The Michigan men rallied to repeat as Big Ten Conference champions a year ago, erasing a 26.5-point deficit on the final day to capture the title. [ U-M Men's 2020-21 Top Times | Diving Bests ]
• The Wolverine women finished runner-up in the Big Ten and turned around to finish sixth at the NCAA Championships with 224.5 points. [ U-M Women's 2020-21 Top Times | Diving Bests ]
• Maggie MacNeil and Olivia Carter won individual NCAA titles, as MacNeil claimed the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle (46.02) and 100-yard butterfly (48.89) and Carter won the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.33). MacNeil's 48.89 100 fly made her the first woman in history to break 49 seconds in the event.
Summer Highlights
• 2021 FINA World Cup - Berlin, Germany (Oct. 1-3): Senior Maggie MacNeil continued her run of success on the international stage, earning gold in the 100-meter butterfly and setting a new Canadian record with a time of 55.30. She also set the Canadian record in the women's 50-meter butterfly (25.13) and backstroke.
• 2020 Tokyo Olympics - Tokyo, Japan (July 24-Aug. 1): The women's program earned six medals, its most in a single Olympics. Senior Maggie MacNeil won a gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly, a silver as part of the Canadian 4x100-meter freestyle relay and a bronze as part of the 4x100-meter medley relay. Siobhán Haughey (2016-19) won two silvers in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle, and Catie DeLoof (2016-19) won bronze as part of the United States' 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
• Michigan had four men's swimmers compete on the world's biggest stage, with 2020 graduate Felix Auböck turning in the best performance, a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle final.
• U.S. Olympic Trials - Omaha, Neb. (June 13-20): Seventeen current or former Wolverines competed in Wave II of the Trials vying for a spot on Team USA. Sophomore Jake Mitchell turned in an electric and unique 400-meter freestyle qualifier, touching the wall in a personal-best 3:45.86. Senior Patrick Callan earned a spot on the 200-meter freestyle relay team after finishing sixth, and 2019 alumna Catie DeLoof qualified for the 100-meter freestyle relay team thanks to a fifth-place finish.
• Callan, Mitchell and Charlie Swanson were named to the 2020-21 U.S. National Team on the men's side, while Olivia Carter earned the distinction on the women's side. Michigan is one of just three combined swim programs in the country to have active student-athletes on both the men's and women's national teams.
Opponent Preview
Arizona
• Head Coach: Augie Busch
• Diving Coach: Dwight Dumais
Men: Coming off a third-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships a year ago and went on to finish tied with Michigan for 12th at the NCAA Championships. The Wildcats lead 3-1 in the all time series.
Women: Went 3-1 on the season and finished sixth at the Pac-12 Championships. Diver Delaney Schnell won the 1-meter and platform titles at the event and finished fourth (1-meter) and runner-up (platform) at the NCAA Championships. This will be the first meeting between the Wolverines and Wildcats.
Louisville
• Head Coach: Arthur Albiero
• Diving Coach: Ryan Rougeux
Men: The Louisville men won their first-ever ACC Championship last season, breaking five school records and producing eight gold-medal performances. The Cardinals finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. Michigan holds a 3-0 edge in the all-time series.
Women: The Louisville women finished third at the ACC Championships and had 12 women qualify for the 2021 NCAA Championships, producing two podium finishes. Michigan is 2-0 in the all-time series.
Miami (Women)
• Head Coach: And Kershaw
• Diving Coach: Randy Ableman
Women: After finishing 10th overall at the ACC Championships, Miami had two divers earn All-America status at least year's NCAA Championships. Michigan and Miami will meet for the first time at the SMU Classic.
Missouri
• Head Coach: Andrew Grevers
• Diving Coach: Kyle Bogner
Men: Took sixth at the SEC Championships and 16th at the NCAA Championships with two individuals claiming All-America honorable mention honors. This will be the first meeting between U-M the Tigers.
Women: Finished seventh at the SEC Championships and 18th at the NCAA Championships, with two Tigers earning All-America status. This will be the first meeting between the Wolverines and Tigers.
Texas A&M (Men)
• Head Coach: Jay Holmes
• Diving Coach: Jay Lerew
Men: Took fourth place at the SEC Championships and turned around to take 10th at the NCAA Championships. Shaine Casas won three individual NCAA titles in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard IM. The Aggies and Wolverines will be meeting for the first time.
SMU
• Head Coach: Greg Rhodenbaugh
• Diving Coach: Darian Schmidt
Men: Won the American Athletic Conference Championships for the 42nd title in program history and the first for the Mustangs since 2013. The Mustangs went on to finish tied for 33rd at the NCAA Championships. The all-time series is tied 2-2.
Women: Finished runner-up at the American Athletic Conference Championships. Michigan holds a 1-0 lead in the all-time series.
Oakland
• Head Coach: Pete Hovland
• Diving Coach: Larry Albright
Men: Won the Horizon League championship for the eighth consecutive season, and had the Athlete of the Year and Swimmer of the Meet honors in the process. The Wolverines are 17-0 in the all-time series.
Women: Dominated the Horizon League Championships, bettering second place by more than 400 points. The Golden Grizzlies claimed the Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Diver of the Meet, Swimming Coach of the Year and women's Diving Coach of the Year accolades. Michigan is 16-1 in the all-time series.
