LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Six members of the University of Michigan softball team were named 2021 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Tuesday (Oct. 5).
The NFCA Scholar-Athlete roster honors student-athletes who achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through the fall 2020 and winter 2021 semesters. More than 8,800 student-athletes earned the recognition in across all divisions -- -- high school and collegiate -- in 2020-21. Michigan's honorees include Meghan Beaubien, Taylor Bump, Ryleigh Carricaburu, Thais Gonzalez, Haley Hoogenraad and Sarah Schaefer.
Michigan boasted 13 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten team last spring -- more than 80 percent of eligible recipients -- while Beaubien and Schaefer also earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades. Hoogenraad previously earned NFCA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2019; the NFCA did not present the award following the shortened 2020 season.
The Wolverines will kick off fall exhibition action with a noon doubleheader against Central Michigan this Saturday (Oct. 9) at the Wilpon Complex, the home of Alumni Field. Michigan also will host Detroit Mercy at 4 p.m. next Thursday (Oct. 14). Admission is free to all fall exhibition games.
