COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team will send five Wolverines to the United State National Junior Team Evaluation Camp, it was announced Tuesday (Sept. 29). The quintet represents the most of any Big Ten program.
Johnny Beecher, Matty Beniers, Thomas Bordeleau, Brendan Brisson and Cam York are among the 36 players invited. Michigan assistant coach Kris Mayotte will serve as an assistant coach with the program.
Beecher and York were members of the 2020 US National Junior Team that competed in Czech Republic. The U18 Men's World Championship scheduled for April was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, Beecher, Beniers and York were members of the bronze medal team.
The camp will be held Oct. 8-13 in Plymouth, Mich., at USA Hockey Arena and is part of the evaluation process to select the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2021 International Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, Dec. 25-Jan. 5, 2021, in Edmonton, Alberta.
The camp is closed to the public, including fans, scouts and media.
The US is seeking its fifth medal in six years after earning four consecutive medals: goal in 2017, silver in 2019 and bronze in both 2018 and 2016.
Michigan players have earned 17 medals with USA Hockey at the World Juniors since 1980.
