ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four University of Michigan men's tennis student-athletes -- Nick Beaty, Connor Johnston, Kristofer Siimar and Mattias Siimar -- were recognized as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes on Monday (July 27). In addition, the Wolverines earned a spot on this year's ITA All-Academic Teams list.
The Scholar-Athlete honor is the second for the Siimars, who both earned their first in 2018, and the first for Beaty and Johnston. The inclusion of the program on the All-Academic Team list is its second (2007) since the ITA began awarding it in 2005.
All four were named to the Big Ten Spring Academic Honor Roll, while Beaty and the Siimar brothers captured Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors. Mattias Siimar also earned ITA All-America doubles honors and was second team All-Big Ten, finishing the season ranked No. 2 in the nation in doubles with a 13-2 dual record and 25-4 overall record.
Michigan ranked third in the nation with a 14-3 overall record and had just won its Big Ten opener when the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The No. 3 ranking is the Wolverines' highest since 1988, when the team finished third.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must have a GPA of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year.
