ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan senior men's golfer Brent Ito was named to the All-Big Ten second team, the conference announced Monday (May 18). Additionally, junior Henry Spring was selected as the Wolverines Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree for the second straight year.
With the spring season, Big Ten and NCAA postseasons canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference and Big Ten coaches voted to continue with selecting the men's golf postseason awards.
Ito's conference accolade is the first of his career, the 21st in program history and the first for a Wolverine since 2018 (Kyle Mueller).
Ito started all seven events in the 2019-20 season before the remainder of the season was halted. He led the Wolverines with a career-low 72.67 scoring average -- nearly one and a half strokes better than his prior best (74.10 in 2018-19). Helping him to that top average was his team-best seven sub-par rounds, which surpassed the entire tally of his three previous seasons (four) combined. Ito fired a season-low 68 (-3) in the first round of the 2019 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22), which was one of three sub-70 rounds on the season.
He was the top finisher in three of the seven events and posted four top-25 individual finishes with a season-low tie for ninth at the season-opening Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 16-17). Paced by his season-low 211 (-2) tally at the Royal Oak Intercollegiate, Ito owned four of U-M's top five 54-hole tallies on the season.
Ito, who started 22 of 28 career events, graduated with a degree in sport management in May. He will be returning for a fifth year following the NCAA's ruling to give exemptions for seniors (spring season) affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
