CALGARY, Alberta -- Freshman defenseman Owen Power of the University of Michigan hockey team has been selected to attend the Hockey Canada World Junior Team Sport Check Selection Camp, it was announced recently by Hockey Canada.
A total of 47 players have been named to the camp roster, which will run Nov. 16-Dec. 13 in Red Deer, Alberta. With most Canadian junior teams currently out of action, the program will hold the extended camp. Power is one of four current NCAA skaters to be invited to the camp.
Power is one of three Wolverines to earn an "A" rating by the most recent NHL Central Scouting Report -- and is projected to be the first or second selection overall. The 2020 USHL Defenseman of the Year, Power led the league's defensemen in scoring as a 17-year-old with 40 points in 45 regular-season games to capture USHL first-team all-star honors. The Chicago Steel defenseman was named to the second-team all-rookie squad in 2018-19 with 25 points in 58 regular-season games. Power was a member of the 2018-19 Canada White team at the World Hockey Challenge U17.
The players invited to the camp, including five goalies, 15 defenseman and 27 forwards, will compete for a chance to represent Canada at the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship, Dec. 5-Jan. 5 in Edmonton, Alberta.
The selection camp will include practices and three intrasquad games, as well as six games against a team of U SPORTS all-stars, between Nov. 28-Dec. 13 before the team enters the bubble in Edmonton in preparation for the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. The camp will take place in a cohort bubble and will be closed to the public and media.
Michigan Hockey has had 49 players compete in the World Junior Championships, seven representing Canada. The most recent member was Andrew Cogliano, who won back-to-back gold medals in 2006 and 2007. Other Wolverines on the Canadian World Junior Championship teams include: David Harlock (1991, gold medal), Jason Botterill (1994, gold medal; 1995, goal medal; 1996 gold medal), Robb Gordon (1996, gold medal), Mike Van Ryn (1998; 1999, silver medal), Mike Cammalleri (2001, bronze medal; 2002, silver medal) and Jeff Tambellini (2004, silver medal).
