
Michigan Set to Play Pair of Matches Against Top 25 Teams

» No. 10 Michigan will hit the road for the first time this season, heading to North Carolina to take on the No. 2-ranked Tar Heels on Saturday (Feb. 1).

The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (2-0) continues dual-match action this week, first heading to North Carolina to take on the No. 2 Tar Heels (5-0) Saturday (Feb. 1) at 11 a.m. U-M will return home to the Varsity Tennis Center on Tuesday (Feb. 4) to host No. 24 Florida (1-1) at 6 p.m.
Wolverine Bites
• The Wolverines are coming off a 2-0 weekend (Jan. 25-26) at the ITA Kick-Off, punching their ticket to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Michigan will make its 10th appearance in the last 11 seasons at the national event in Chicago next weekend (Feb. 7-10).
• The Wolverines moved up to No. 10 in this week's ITA poll after knocking off then-No. 12-ranked Central Florida. U-M also is No. 8 in the USTA poll.
• Michigan had a pair of freshmen make their dual-match debut last weekend. Andrea Cerdan went 2-0 at the No. 2 singles position, while Nicole Hammond picked up a win at No. 4. Hammond teamed up with Bella Lorenzini for a 1-1 record at the No. 3 doubles spot, with Cerdan playing a pair of unfinished matches at No. 1 with Alyvia Jones.
• Cerdan and junior Lorenzini remain perfect in dual-match action after each went 2-0 during the ITA Kick-Off. Cerdan won a pair of matches at the No. 2 spot, with Lorenzini winning both her matches at No. 6.
• Senior Chiara Lommer picked up her first win since the fall in dramatic fashion, clinching Michigan's 4-2 victory over No. 12 UCF with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at the No. 5 spot. [ Lommer Discusses Long Point ]
• Michigan and North Carolina will be meeting for the sixth straight season after the Tar Heels recorded a 5-2 win at the VTC last year. U-M last headed to Chapel Hill on Feb. 18, 2018. UNC features four ranked singles players in No. 2 Cameron Morra, No. 4 Sara Daavettila, No. 8 Alexa Graham and No. 36 Alle Sanford. On the doubles court, UNC has three ranked teams in No. 5 Morra and Makenna Jones, No. 6 Daavettila and Graham, along with No. 50 Sanford and Anika Yarlagadda.
• The Wolverines and Gators will meet for the second straight season after Florida recorded a 4-3 in Gainesville last season. Florida comes to Ann Arbor with a 1-1 record following a loss to North Carolina State in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off last weekend. Florida has three ranked singles players in No. 37 McCartney Kessler, No. 88 Layne Sleeth and No. 96 Victoria Emme, with Sleeth and Marlee Zein teaming up to form the No. 32-ranked doubles team.
• After the fall portion of the season, Michigan has a pair of ranked singles players in No. 26 Giulia Pairone and No. 85 Andrea Cerdan. Pairone won the singles title at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships this past fall, with both Pairone and Cerdan competing in singles at the ITA Fall National Championships. New individual rankings will be released Feb. 5 in advance of the ITA Indoor Championship.
• After this week of action, Michigan will head to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago (Feb. 7-10). U-M is guaranteed to play three matches at the event, with a chance at a fourth if the Wolverines advance to the championship match.
