CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team played on the road for the first time during dual-match action, dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 1) at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
North Carolina got off to a fast start, winning the doubles point behind victories at No. 3 and No. 1.
The Tar Heels carried that momentum into singles action, winning five first sets. Senior Giulia Pairone picked up Michigan's first-set win, taking a 6-3 win over No. 2 Cameron Morro at the No. 2 spot.
North Carolina won the first three matches off court to wrap up a 4-0 win, winning at No. 4, No. 1 and No. 6. Pairone was close to a win at No. 2, leading 6-5 in her second set when the match was abandoned.
Freshman Nicole Hammond split her match at No. 3, grabbing a 7-5 second-set win to send her match to a third set before it also was abandoned.
Michigan will be back in home action Tuesday (Feb. 4), hosting Florida at 6 p.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
