ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team clinched a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships after recording a 4-2 win over No. 12-ranked Central Florida on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
After UCF claimed the doubles point and got off to a strong start in singles, Michigan persevered and pulled out the overall win. The final moments of the match featured senior Chiara Lommer coming through in a second-set tiebreaker. After UCF evened the tiebreaker score at 4-4, Lommer won three consecutive points to secure the Wolverines' victory.
UCF took the doubles point and got on the board first with a pair of wins at No. 3 and No. 1, respectively.
Michigan quickly evened the score at 1-1 behind a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 from junior Alyvia Jones. After she earned a first-set win, it was all Jones in the second as she found her rhythm and never looked back in the win.
UCF went back in front, 2-1, with a win at No. 3.
Junior Bella Lorenzini put Michigan's third point on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6. Lorenzini won the final three games of the first set after falling behind, 4-3, to take early control of the match. In the second set, she secured the victory in straight sets after breaking UCF in the final game for the win.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Andrea Cerdan rallied for a three-set win for Michigan's third point of the day. After dropping the first set, 7-5, Cerdan rolled to a 6-2 win in the second and a 6-1 win in the third.
Lommer was Michigan's final point of the day as she hung on for a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 5. Lommer breezed to a first-set win and jumped out, 5-2, in the second. UCF made a comeback to force a tiebreaker in which Lommer won the final three points.
Pairone's match at No. 1 was abandoned, as she held a 4-3 lead in the third.
