Wolverine Bites
• The season opener in Chicago will be the head coaching debut for new head coach Zach Barlow, who spent the last five seasons at Illinois. Over that five-year span, Barlow helped Mike Small guide Illinois to five consecutive Big Ten titles. Also during that time, Illinois won three NCAA regional championships, advanced to five consecutive NCAA finals and made it to the match play semifinal three times. [ Release ]
• In addition to the hiring of Barlow, the Wolverines welcome his college teammate Matt Hoffman as his assistant coach. After a six-year professional career, Hoffman spent the last two years as an assistant coach with one of Canada's most prestigious golf programs at Humber College (2017-19) in Toronto. In his two seasons, the Hawks won back-to-back Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championships and finished second in the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships after a third-place finish in 2018. • After the graduation of Nick Carlson, Michigan returns four of its top five golfers from a season ago. Junior Charlie Pilon started all 10 events last season and was second on U-M with a 73.46 scoring average. Classmate Henry Spring was just behind Pilon and started eight of nine events and closed with a 73.70 per-round tally. Senior Brent Ito returns for his final season after he closed with a 74.10 per-round average last year. After battling a broken ankle throughout the winter, sophomore Patrick Sullivan will look to be a full-time starter.
• The Wolverines will balance their 2019-20 regular-season schedule with five fall and five spring events before the postseason begins. After the season opener, the Wolverines will head to Toledo's Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 23-24). In October, U-M will play in Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Classic (Oct. 7-8), Indiana's Crooked Stick Invitational (Oct. 14-15) and Baylor's Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 21-22). [ Schedule ]
