LINZ OTTENSHEIM, Austria -- Senior Tayla-May Bentley and sophomore Jessica Schoonbee of the University of Michigan rowing program advanced to the C final in the women's pair (W2-) at the Senior World Rowing Championships on Thursday (Aug. 29), after they finished third in their semifinal race. The strong performance continues a week of impressive racing and invaluable experience for the two Wolverines.
Racing out of lane two between Russia in lane one and the winning German boat in lane three, the South African duo showed good rhythm on its way to a third-place finish. Aided by a fast final 500 meters, they were neck-and-neck with Poland down the line and nearly caught the second-place boat which finished in 7:22.41. The South African boat crossed in 7:22.95.
Bentley and Schoonbee will end their week in Austria with the C final race on Saturday (Aug. 31) at 3:53 a.m. In addition to the German and Polish boats, the South Africans will race against Ukraine, Denmark and the Czech Republic.
Bentley and Schoonbee competed together earlier this summer at the U-23 World Championships where they collected a silver medal in this same event. The U-M teammates helped the 1V8 boat win Big Ten gold and place third in the nation this year.
