LINZ OTTENSHEIM, Austria -- Senior Tayla-May Bentley and sophomore Jessica Schoonbee of the University of Michigan rowing team advanced to C/D semifinal action in the women's pair (W2-) at the Senior World Rowing Championships on Wednesday (Aug. 28), racing to a fifth-place finish in their quarterfinal event.
Racing out of lane one next to Greece, the South African duo put down a competitive first 500 meters, but it was not a pace that could be maintained over the latter half of the race, with the top four boats closing in 1:50.56 or faster.
A strong middle 1,000 helped Canada win the heat in 7:10.96, with Greece, Great Britain and Ukraine going two-three-four in close succession. The South African time of 7:25.14 was good enough to beat the Dutch boat (7:28.61) and both boats will join Ukraine in the C/D semifinal Thursday (Aug. 29), with A finals scheduled for Saturday morning (Aug. 31).
Bentley and Schoonbee competed together earlier this summer at the U-23 World Championships during which they collected a silver medal in this same event. The U-M teammates helped the 1V8 boat win Big Ten gold and place third in the nation this year.
