ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team opened its 2019 schedule with a 5-0 victory over Marshall on Thursday night (Aug. 22) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Meredith Haakenson led the Wolverines with the first two goals of her career, while junior Sarah Stratigakis added three points on the night with a goal and an assist. Junior Nicki Hernandez and sophomore Raleigh Loughman also found the back of the net for U-M. Freshman Danielle Wolfe recorded her first career points, scoring a goal on a penalty kick late in the second half.
In all, five freshmen made their Michigan debuts. Hannah Blake and Jayde Riviere started, while Lauren Brideau, Lily Farkas and Wolfe made appearances as substitutes. Along with Blake and Riviere, sophomores Skylar Anderson and Sydney Shepherd earned their first starts as Wolverines.
Junior goalkeeper Hillary Beall notched the win in goal, as she made one save on an early shot in the first half, and was the only shot she faced over the first 45 minutes.
Michigan got off two early shots to test the Thundering Herd keeper, who was able to corral the ball to keep the Wolverines off the board in the opening minutes. U-M continued to work its way past the backline early in the contest when Stratigakis took the ball up the left sideline and passed it to a striking Hernandez.
Hernandez dribbled the ball down to the three-yard line before crossing with her left foot to the front of the net to a wide-open Haakenson. The sophomore midfielder struck hard with her right foot into the bottom-left corner of the goal to give Michigan a 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute.
The U-M defense allowed Marshall just three shots to Marshall in the contest, with one reaching goal, while the offense had 10 shots with four reaching goal in the first half.
Loughman netted her second career goal just 18 seconds into the second half to put the Wolverines up, 2-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Stratigakis scored when she fired a shot into the bottom-right corner of the net from 20 yards out.
The Wolverines added to their lead in the 76th minute when the ball was played up to Wolfe as she sprinted down the field. She and the Marshall defender tangled inside the box before the Thundering Herd was issued a red card and Wolfe was awarded a penalty kick. The freshman forward struck the ball into the lower-left corner to give U-M a 4-0 lead.
Haakenson posted her second goal of the night when she headed in a cross from Brooke Cilley with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
Michigan will conclude its home-opening weekend Sunday (Aug. 25) when the Wolverines welcome Utah Valley to U-M Soccer Stadium for a 2 p.m. contest. [ Tickets ]
