GAVLE, Sweden -- University of Michigan distance runner Devin Meyrer is set to represent Germany at the 2019 European U23 Championships in Gavle, Sweden, on Saturday (July 13).
Meyrer, a junior on the track and field and cross country teams who was born in the German town of Bremen, will run in the 5,000-meter final on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. local time (2:05 p.m. EDT).
The Euro U23 Championships at Gunder Hägg Stadium are set to bring together more than 1,100 competitors from 50 different nations, all of whom are age 22 or younger.
Entering with a career-best 14:00.91 from the Stanford Cardinal Classic this April, Meyrer is seeded 21st in his 29-man race. With 19 men in the field who have run faster than 14:00 this year, Meyrer could dip below that threshold this weekend.
Race-time conditions are projected to be ideal for quick times with temperatures in the mid-60s and minimal wind.
Meyrer earned his berth to the championships by way of his fourth-place finish at the German U23 Championships.
During the NCAA season he finished fourth in the Big Ten Championships 10,000-meter final and represented Michigan in that event at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
