ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team announced seniors Lexi Funk and Maddy Osman as its captains for the 2019-20 school year.
Funk will be a team leader for the second straight season after being voted a team captain as a junior in 2018-19. The Aurora, Illinois, native was a second team All-American on balance beam and is a two-time All-Big Ten selection.
"It is such an honor to be voted captain, knowing my teammates have faith that I will do the right things and am capable," said Funk. "I am really excited to start building for next year. I learned a lot from Emma (McLean), who was a two-year captain, about listening to the team and being their voice when communicating with coaches."
Osman joins her classmate as a captain for next season. She also was a second team All-American on beam as a junior and earned a share of the team's Most Improved Award after battling back from injuries her first two years to make an impact on beam and floor exercise in 2019.
"When I found out I was voted a captain it was an amazing feeling," said Osman. "I am humbled and honored to be picked by my team and will do what I can to carry on the legacy built by past teams. I will help motivate and encourage everyone on the team to do their best and continue the unbreakable bond we formed this year."
Funk and Osman were voted captains by their teammates following the NCAA Championship and were announced to the team at the year-end banquet.
