ORLANDO, Fla. -- Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis kept their run alive on Thursday (May 23), as they picked up a three-set win in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals in the NCAA Doubles Championship at the USTA National Campus.
The first set featured three breaks of serve to start before Michigan held at love for a 3-1 lead. Both teams held serve the next time back before the Maize and Blue cashed in on the deuce point of Georgia's serve for a 5-2 advantage. Michigan served out the set in the next game and grabbed a 6-2 win.
The second set started just like the first, as the teams exchanged breaks to start. Georgia held on the deuce point during its second trip back to the line and used that momentum to break Michigan in the next game for a 3-1 lead.
U-M got the break right back, winning the deuce point on Georgia's next service game to get back on serve. Michigan won again on a deuce point, leveling the set at 3.
Georgia held on its serve and then broke Michigan on the deuce point to take a 5-3 lead. The Bulldogs won the next game to take the second set and send the match to a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a full third set.
The Wolverines took control midway through the set, grabbing a 5-2 lead. Michigan held four match points following a 9-5 advantage, but Georgia reeled off three straight points to close the gap to just a point at 9-8. Michigan came through on the next point to wrap up a 10-8 win for the match.
Fahey and Minor are the first Wolverines to reach the semifinals of the doubles tournament. Minor has now reached the semifinals of both the singles (2017, national champion) and doubles championships.
Michigan will square off against No. 4 seed Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mira Horvit of South Carolina tomorrow (May 24) in the semifinals. Â
