ORLANDO, Fla. -- Seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team punched their ticket to the national championship match following a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 3-ranked Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit of South Carolina in the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Friday evening (May 24) at the USTA National Campus.
It was all Michigan in the first set as the Wolverines raced out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Fahey started it off by holding at love, followed by a U-M break of serve in the second game. Minor held during her first trip back to the line for a 3-0 lead.
South Carolina got on the board at 3-1, which ignited a run of four straight holds between the two teams. The Gamecocks headed back to serve to stay in the set at 5-2, but Michigan won the final three points to wrap up a 6-2 win.
South Carolina took an early 2-0 lead in the second set, taking advantage of a pair of Michigan double faults in the first game to get the break. Minor held at love in the third game to halve the deficit.
Michigan got the break back in the next game as South Carolina double faulted on game point to tie the set at 2. The Wolverines held in the ensuing game, winning the final two points to take a 3-2 lead and stay on serve.
U-M kept the momentum going, with a break of South Carolina in the sixth game of the set. Minor ripped a forehand return and South Carolina put the volley in the net to give Michigan a 4-2 lead.
The Wolverines came through on the deuce point to keep the break and took a 5-2 advantage.
Michigan took four match points on South Carolina's serve, as it eventually cashed in on the deuce point when Carolina's lob attempt went long to seal a 6-2, 6-2 Michigan win.
Fahey and Minor are the first Wolverines in school history to advance to the national championship match, which will be played Saturday (May 25) at 5 p.m at the USTA National Campus.
