
Wolverine Doubles Duo Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The senior duo of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor kept their tournament run alive in a straight-sets win over the No. 11-ranked duo from UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Wednesday (May 22) at the USTA National Campus.
The Wolverines quickly struck to start the match, breaking UCLA for the early lead. Michigan came through on two deuce points over its first three service games for a 4-2 advantage. Fahey and Minor got another break and then served out the set in the ensuing game for a 6-2 first-set win.
Fahey and Minor once again got an early break in the second set, cashing in on the deuce point for a 1-0 lead. UCLA returned the favor, breaking Michigan to keep the set level at one game each. Following a pair of holds for both squads, both teams were broken to once again keep the set tied at 3.
Michigan grabbed two break points on UCLA's serve in the ninth game of the second set. After the Bruins fought one off to get to deuce, the Wolverines won the next point for a 5-4 lead and the opportunity to serve out the match.
UCLA was able to break the Wolverines in the next game, once again tying the set at 5. Both teams held in their ensuing service games to send the second set to a tiebreaker.
It was all Michigan in the breaker as U-M won the first two points. That was all the distance Fahey and Minor needed to take a 7-2 win for the match.
The win gives Michigan its first doubles tournament quarterfinalists in program history, solidifying All-America doubles honors for both Fahey and Minor.
