ORLANDO, Fla. -- University of Michigan men's tennis freshman Andrew Fenty saw his historic rookie season come to a close in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday morning (May 20) at the USA National Campus.
Competing against No. 3-seeded Alex Rybakov of TCU, Fenty was unable to battle back from an early hole, falling 6-3, 6-2. Down 5-0 in the second set, Fenty broke and held serve to pick up two games before Rybakov clinched the match.
Fenty, who was named ITA Rookie of the Year, Big Ten Rookie of the Year and first team All-Big Ten, enjoyed a breakout rookie season for the Maize and Blue. The Washington, D.C., native finished with a 27-7 record in singles play, while having similar success in doubles with a 25-7 record.
Fenty's team-leading 27 wins are the third most in program history for a freshman. He also had a team-leading 21 doubles wins this season, which ranks eighth most by a freshman. Fenty became the 28th player in Michigan history to join the 20-20 club (20 doubles wins and 20 singles wins in a season) and just the sixth freshman.
