IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Sophomore Cameron Bock of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team captured the Big Ten all-around title, while classmate Jacob Moore and senior Emyre Cole placed second and third as the Wolverines took third place (409.550) at the 2019 Big Ten Championships on Friday (April 5) at Iowa's Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
With Bock scoring an 84.600, Moore marking an 83.200 and Cole an 82.100, it is believed to be the first time in program history that the Wolverines swept the medal stand in the all-around.
Penn State (410.350) won the meet, followed by a 410.100 from Illinois. U-M qualified 14 gymnasts on eight routines for Saturday night's (April 6) event finals.
Michigan began the night with a bye prior to starting on pommel horse in the second rotation. Junior Mack Lasker led the effort with a 14.10, while Moore and Bock (13.90) helped offset a pair of 12.30 scores to give U-M at 66.400, one point above U-M's season average.
On rings in the third rotation, senior Ryan Dunning marked a 14.25, while sophomore James Read (14.05) and senior Marty Strech (14.00) helped paced U-M to a 69.250.
U-M went big in the fourth rotation on vault, marking the top score of the night on the table with a 71.450, led by Cole's 15.00 and a 14.45 from sophomore Nick Guy. After three rotations, U-M had a running score of 207.100Â and sat in fourth place with a full rotation in hand.
On parallel bars, U-M surpassed its season average of 67.119 with a 68.900, led by Bock with a 14.600. With byes not factored in, U-M sat in second behind Illinois by a .100 margin.
U-M turned in a subpar high bar rotation in the sixth rotation, marking a 64.30 to fall into third place, and never recovered, even after a 69.25 on floor exercise that featured a 14.60 from Moore, the top score of the night, and a 14.45 from Cole, who claimed the second-highest mark.
Bock's win in the all-around is the 16th in program history, and the first since Sam Mikulak in 2014.
Bock qualified for finals on pommel horse, high bar and parallel bars, while Moore earned spots on floor, pommel horse and vault. Cole will appear on floor exercise, vault and high bar, while Lasker (pommel horse), Read (still rings), Dunning (still rings), Guy (vault) and freshman Kevin Penev (floor exercise) also qualified.
Saturday's Big Ten Event Finals competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CDT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
