ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan softball team took advantage of free bases, timely hitting and a pitching gem to cruise to an 8-0, five-inning decision against Penn State on Saturday (April 27) in front of a capacity crowd of 2,490 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Alex Storako (12-6) gave up a tomahawk single against the PSU leadoff hitter in the first inning and did not allow another runner, striking out nine Nittany Lions, including three to close out the game in the top of the fifth.
The Wolverines earned a leadoff hit of their own in the opening frame, as senior second baseman Faith Canfield set the tone with a no-doubt solo home run, skied high and deep over the left-field wall. It was her eighth homer of the season. Canfield reached in all three plate appearances on the day, with the home run and a pair of walks.
Michigan scored three in the first, adding runs off RBI singles from senior first baseman Alex Sobczak and junior right fielder Haley Hoogenraad, and pushed across another on a second-inning sac fly after back-to-back walks and a sac bunt put runners in scoring position.
The Wolverines again took advantage of free bases and small ball to double their lead in the fourth and earn their run-rule margin. Senior center fielder Natalie Peters drove in a run on a bounced single past the PSU second baseman before Sobczak and junior third baseman Madison Uden -- last night's walk-off hero -- drew walks with the bases loaded. A fielder's choice, also with the bases loaded, plated the game's final run.
Michigan (36-11, 18-1 Big Ten) will wrap up the home portion of hits 2019 regular-season schedule with the series finale against Penn State Sunday (April 28) at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field. Tickets are sold out.
