
Fenty Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Conference

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's tennis freshman Andrew Fenty was named first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Freshman of the Year as announced Thursday (April 25) by the Big Ten Conference. The selections were made by the conference's coaches. Additionally, senior Gabe Tishman was tabbed as one of the 12 Sportsmanship Award honorees.
Fenty is the fourth Wolverine to earn the Freshman of the Year honors, following MaliVai Washington (1988), Dan Brakus (1991) and Evan King (2010). Fenty, ranked 109th in the ITA Rankings, has a 24-5 overall record in singles this season with an 11-2 mark in Big Ten action. He has won 16 of his last 17 singles matches, including three victories over ranked opponents during that span.
Tishman is having a breakout senior campaign, registering a career-high 16 wins and 11 dual-match victories. He also sports a 14-7 mark in doubles, which is also a career best for wins.
Michigan is hosting the Big Ten Tournament, running Thursday through Sunday (April 25-28) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The fourth-seeded Wolverines received a first-round bye and will begin postseason play in the quarterfinal round Friday (April 26) at 10 a.m. against either No. 5 seed Indiana or No. seed 12 Michigan State. Admission to the tournament is free.
