The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will wrap up regular-season competition on Senior Day against the No. 18 UIC Flames on Saturday (March 30) at 1 p.m., inside Cliff Keen Arena. Admission to the meet will be free. Michigan is coming off a loss at Nebraska on March 23, but thanks to a loss by Iowa at Minnesota, the Wolverines earned a three-way share of the first-ever Big Ten regular-season championship.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan captured a share of the Big Ten regular-season title despite a loss at No. 7 Nebraska, holding the title with both Iowa and Minnesota as all three teams ended the regular season with identical 4-2 records. The title is the first time the Big Ten has awarded a regular-season conference champion for men's gymnastics.
• Based off season averages, U-M ranks in the top-five on five events, highlighted by a No. 2 ranking on vault with a four-score average of 72.050. Michigan also ranks fourth on floor exercise (70.150) and still rings (67.267), and fifth on parallel bars (67.800) and high bar (67.550).
• In the latest Road to Nationals rankings, U-M ranks No. 3 with a team four-score average of 411.300, trailing only No. 1 Oklahoma (421.383) and No. 2 Stanford (417.317). The Wolverines also rank No. 3 team in the CGA Coaches poll, also behind the Sooners and Cardinal.
• After sitting out the previous three meets due to a violation of team rules, senior Emyre Cole will compete on Senior Day. He ranks No. 5 on vault (14.667) and No. 14 on floor exercise (14.300).
• Two-time NCAA vault champion senior Anthony McCallum has found his stride late in the regular season, and is ranked No. 2 in the country on the table with a 14.733 average. In the last two meets, he has scored a 14.850 and 14.800, and trails only Nebraska's Anton Stephenson in the national and Big Ten rankings.
• Sophomore Jacob Moore enters the meet ranked No. 3 in the country on floor exercise after marking a school-record 15.300 against Iowa (March 9). The score has held as the top tally in the Big Ten and remains tied with Oklahoma's Yul Moldauer for the top score in the nation this season.
• Sophomore Cameron Bock owns the highest all-around score in the country this season with an 84.700, but no longer is ranked in the category due to not meeting the four-score minimum for ranking. He is No. 4 on parallel bars (14.433), No. 5 on still rings (14.283), No. 7 on high bar (14.033) and No. 8 on pommel horse (14.050).
• Individually, junior Mack Lasker ranks No. 7 on pommel horse with a 14.067 average, while senior Justin Hopgood ranks No. 10 on high bar with 13.950 average.
• Following the meet, U-M will honor its graduating seniors in Emyre Cole, Ryan Dunning, Mitchell Gornto, Justin Hopgood, Alec Krystek, Anthony McCallum, Marty Strech, and Matthew Whitaker.
Opponent Preview
• UIC, ranked No. 18 in the CGA and Road to Nationals rankings, owns a team-score average of 363.033. The Flames are ranked No. 18 on all six events. Their highest-rated gymnast is Sam Montague, who is ranked No. 66 on floor exercise with a 13.500 average.
• Michigan, which defeated the Flames at the Windy City Invitational on Jan. 17, owns a 19-2 overall mark in the all-time series against Illinois-Chicago.
• Saturday's matchup between the Wolverines and Flames will be the last regular-season meeting between the schools, as UIC will drop its men's and women's gymnastics programs after the season.
