The University of Michigan women's tennis team (9-4, 5-0 Big Ten) concludes the home portion of its schedule this weekend, hosting Penn State (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) on Friday (March 29) at 3:30 p.m. and welcoming No. 19 Ohio State (14-2, 3-0 Big Ten) on Sunday (March 31) at 1 p.m. Michigan's senior class of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor will be honored prior to the Penn State match as part of Senior Day.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan concludes the home portion of its schedule this weekend, hosting Penn State (March 29) and No. 19 Ohio State (March 31). The Maize and Blue is 7-2 at the Varsity Tennis Center this season.
• The Wolverines ran their winning streak to four matches with a 4-1 win at Purdue (March 22) and a 7-0 shutout of Minnesota (March 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M has outscored its five Big Ten opponents, 31-2, this season.
• Michigan is in a four-way tie atop the Big Ten standings with a 5-0 record. Northwestern (3-0), Wisconsin (5-0) and Ohio State (3-0) also are unbeaten in conference play. U-M does not face Wisconsin during the regular season. Â
• Michigan's senior class of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor will be honored prior to Friday's match against Penn State. The duo has combined to help Michigan to the quarterfinals of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the 2017 Big Ten Championship and the 2018 Big Ten Tournament title. They each earned All-America honors in 2017 as Minor won the national championship and Fahey reached the quarterfinals.
• Brienne Minor is two singles wins away from becoming the ninth Wolverine in school history to reach 100 singles wins. Minor enters the weekend with a 98-28 mark on the singles court.
• Penn State (10-4, 2-1 Big Ten) comes to Ann Arbor after pulling out a 4-3 win against Nebraska on March 24. U-M came away with a 7-0 win over PSU last season, the first meeting between the two teams since the 2014-15 season. Michigan leads the all-time series, 28-3, against the Nittany Lions.
• No. 19 Ohio State (14-2, 3-0 Big Ten) has three ranked singles players in No. 55 Isabelle Boulais, No. 61 Kolie Allen and No. 78 Shiori Fukuda, with Boulais and Fukuda teaming up to form the No. 35-ranked doubles team. Michigan leads the all-time series against Ohio State, 43-16, after recording a 4-3 win in Columbus last season. The Buckeyes will play at Michigan State before heading to the VTC.
• U-M is 116-6 in Big Ten play under 12th-year head coach Ronni Bernstein. Michigan went 10-1 last season during conference play and has a 5-0 record this season.
• Michigan is 9-0 this season when it wins the doubles point, earning victories over Ole Miss, Michigan State, Texas, Pepperdine, Baylor, Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue and Minnesota when securing the match's first point.
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein mixed up Michigan's doubles lineup as the Wolverines resumed Big Ten play against Nebraska (March 16) and it has paid off. Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey are 4-0 at the top spot in the four matches since, with Anca Craciun and Giulia Pairone earning a 3-0 record at No. 2. Michigan has won the last four doubles points since the switch.
• The Wolverines have six players who have reached double-digit singles wins in Kate Fahey (26), Chiara Lommer (19), Brienne Minor (18), Giulia Pairone (17), Alyvia Jones (13) and Anca Craciun (13).
• Kate Fahey has won nine straight singles matches, all coming at the top of the lineup, to run her record to 26-5 this season. Anca Craciun is the owner of Michigan's second-longest win streak after going 2-0 this past week with a pair of wins at No. 5. Craciun's five-match streak has pushed her over .500 on the season at 13-9.
• Michigan features four ranked singles players in No. 4 Kate Fahey, No. 24 Chiara Lommer, No. 36 Brienne Minor and No. 107 Giulia Pairone.
• Senior Kate Fahey heads into the weekend with a 26-5 singles record this season. Fahey swept the titles at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship and finished as the singles runner-up at the ITA Fall National Championships. Fahey is 120-28 in singles during her illustrious career, putting her third all-time in wins. Fahey's .809 win percentage is tops in Michigan history. Emina Bektas (129) and Sarah Lee (125) occupy the top two spots on the all-time wins list.
• Michigan has five regular-season matches remaining in the month of April, all coming on the road. The Wolverines begin the stretch in Illinois next weekend, facing the Illini on April 6 and playing at Northwestern on April 7.
