Wolverines Blank Penn State on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won its fifth straight match, knocking off Penn State, 5-0, on Friday afternoon (March 29) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan honored its senior class of Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor prior to the match as part of Senior Day.
Michigan grabbed the early lead by virtue of the doubles point, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
U-M's senior duo of Fahey and Minor fell down a break at 2-1 but proceeded to rip off five straight games to take a 6-2 victory.
At No. 2, junior Giulia Pairone and freshman Anca Craciun took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back, sealing a 6-1 win to put Michigan on the board first.
After Michigan won all six first sets in singles, Pairone was first off court for the Wolverines at No. 2. Pairone dropped just one game the entire match, grabbing a 6-1, 6-0 win for her fifth straight victory.
Fahey quickly followed Pairone with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1. Fahey broke in the final game of the first set to take the early lead, keeping the momentum into the second set for her 10th consecutive win.
Sophomore Alyvia Jones provided the clinching point, winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. Jones raced out to a 4-0 lead in the second set to wrap up the win.
The teams were only playing to four points, but junior Chiara Lommer was in the middle of her match point at No. 3 when Jones finished her match. Lommer won the point, wrapping up a 6-1, 6-2 win for Michigan's fifth and final point.
U-M will be back in action on Sunday (March 31), wrapping up the home slate against Ohio State at 1 p.m. It is Michigan's "Maize Out" event, with fans encouraged to wear maize. The first 100 fans will receive a t-shirt and pizza.
