ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team earned its fifth Big Ten Conference win after sweeping Minnesota, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M has now won its last four contests and has conceded one total point over that span.
The No. 76-ranked duo of seniors Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor breezed past the Gophers at the No. 1 doubles spot, earning their team-leading ninth win as a pair -- and fourth in a row -- with a 6-0 victory. Michigan's second point in doubles came from a tightly contested battle at No. 2. Junior Giulia Pairone and freshman Anca Craciun battled back from being down, 3-1, while serving for the match with the score at 5-4. Minnesota battled back to send the match to a tiebreaker, where the Maize and Blue came out on top with a 7-6 (5) win.
Fahey continued her strong play into singles, where she made quick work at the top spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win. The No 4-ranked singles player in the country improved her record to a team-leading 26-5 mark and has won her last nine matches.
Craciun continued on her solid rookie campaign with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5, her second of the weekend and 13th of the season. A 6-2, 6-2 win by No. 107-ranked Pairone at No. 2 would clinch the match for Michigan for its fifth conference victory in as many matches.
Michigan also got wins on the remaining three courts to secure the sweep, its third in four matches.
The Wolverines will return to the Varsity Tennis Center on Friday (March 29) when it hosts Penn State at 3:30 p.m.
