Wolverine Bites
• Michigan is 9-1 on the season after suffering its first loss at No. 1 Penn State last Friday (Feb. 1) but remains ranked No. 4 nationally -- its highest ranking of the 2018-19 season and where it finished in last season's final NWCA poll.
• The Wolverines' 9-0 start was the program's best since an undefeated 14-0 season in 1973-74. The Wolverines have defeated five ranked opponents this season and, over its 9-0 start, outscored their dual opposition by a combined 241-98 margin. U-M is also 4-0 in home duals this season, with two apiece at Cliff Keen Arena and Crisler Center.
• Michigan has several connections with the Northwestern program. Two Wildcat assistant coaches, Andrew Howe and Jimmy Kennedy, are former members of Michigan's Cliff Keen Wrestling Club. Kennedy spent six years (2011-17) in Ann Arbor and trained alongside many of the current Wolverine wrestlers. Sophomore/freshman Andrew Davison's younger brother, Lucas, is a freshman on the Northwestern team, while the Wildcats' Tyler Morland was high school teammates with Malik and Myles Amine at Detroit Catholic Central.
• Senior/junior Stevan Micic is 10-0 on the season and has earned bonus points in eight bouts, including each of his seven second-semester outings. He has defeated ranked opponents in three of his last five matches, most notably a dominant 14-1 major decision over Ohio State's No. 6 Luke Pletcher on Jan. 25. Micic, has claimed four straight over Pletcher since dropping their initial meeting at last year's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Last year, Micic posted bonus points in 81 percent of his wins (21 of 26).
• Fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo surged back into the nation's top five at 157 pounds -- he is a consensus No. 5 -- after defeating Ohio State's then-No. 6 Ke-Shawn Hayes, 3-2, two weeks ago (Jan. 25). Pantaleo, who also has seen limited action after missing most of the first semester with mononucleosis, has earned ranked wins in three of his last five bouts but most recently dropped a 9-2 decision to two-time NCAA champion Jason Nolf of Penn State. Pantaleo took sixth place at Midlands (Dec. 29-30) at 149 pounds but returned to and will remain at 157 pounds, where he took fifth place at last season's NCAA Championships.
• Freshman heavyweight Mason Parris clinched the Wolverines' 19-17 dual win at Ohio State in the final bout, defeating No. 19 Chase Singletary, 6-3, behind two takedowns and 1:13 in riding-time advantage. With the win, Parris avenged one of his three season losses -- a 15-9 decision to Singletary in the Ohio Intercollegiate Open semifinals (Nov. 11). It was Parris' fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.
• All 10 Wolverine starters are ranked nationally by at least one media outlet, including seven who are ranked within the top 10 at their respective weights. Based on their highest ranking, No. 1 Stevan Micic (133 pounds), No. 3 Myles Amine (174), No. 4 Mason Parris (Hwt), No. 5 Alec Pantaleo (157), No. 6 Kanen Storr (141) and No. 7 Logan Massa (165) lead the U-M squad.

Scouting the Opposition
Northwestern: The Wildcats are 3-8 on the season and 1-5 in Big Ten duals after falling to No. 6 Ohio State (25-15, Feb. 3) at home last weekend. Last Time Out
The Wolverines dropped their first dual meet of the season last Friday (Jan. 1), falling to No. 1 Penn State, 25-11, at the Bryce Jordan Center.
