ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team claimed the doubles point and five straight singles matches en route to upsetting No. 6 Texas, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan was able to claim the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The Wolverines rallied after dropping a 6-3 match at No. 2, evening it out with a win from the duo of senior Kate Fahey and junior Giulia Pairone at No. 1, 6-3. The Wolverines clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the three spot from sophomore Bella Lorenzini and junior Chiara Lommer.
The Wolverines continued their solid play into singles, where they claimed five consecutive wins in straight sets. Lommer cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Pairone continued her perfect play in dual matches with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the three spot.
Fahey clinched the match for Michigan with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the top spot. Fahey had a 24-shot rally on her match point to hand the Longhorns their first loss of the season.
The Maize and Blue claimed two more points from wins at Nos. 6 and 2, before Texas got its lone point of the afternoon with a win at No. 5.
U-M will be on a short break before hosting Pepperdine at the Varsity Tennis Center on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m.
