ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court in a 4-0 shutout of No. 20 Pepperdine on Friday evening (Feb. 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
U-M took the doubles point with a pair of 6-4 wins at No. 1 and No. 2. At the No. 2 spot, senior Brienne Minor and sophomore Alyvia Jones broke at 2-1 for the early advantage. The Wolverine duo fell in a 15-40 hole on Minor's ensuing serve but worked back to win the deuce point and keep the break. That was all the space Minor and Jones needed in taking the 6-4 win.
The match at No. 1 featured six straight breaks of serve before senior Kate Fahey held on her serve at 4-3. Fahey and junior Giulia Pairone broke Pepperdine in the next service game, but the Waves returned the favor on Pairone's serve to stay in the match at 5-4. As had been the case throughout the match, Michigan once again came through with a break on a double fault to seal up the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
The Wolverines took five first sets in singles action, including a pair of tiebreakers from Fahey and sophomore Bella Lorenzini. Fahey grinded out a 13-11 tiebreak win at No. 1, with Lorenzini winning the final two points in an 8-6 victory at No. 6.
Minor was first off court for the Maize and Blue, dropping just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 3. Minor took advantage of early breaks in both sets, breezing to her fourth dual-match win of the season.
Pairone put Michigan on the brink behind a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. The junior took a 5-0 lead in the second set before Pepperdine won a pair of games. Pairone closed it out on her serve, winning the deuce point for U-M's third point of the evening.
Moments later, Jones provided the clinching point at No. 5. Tied at 3 in the first set, Jones ripped off eight straight games to take control. Pepperdine got on the board at 5-1, but Jones came through on her serve to wrap up a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The remaining three matches on court were abandoned.
U-M will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 24), when it hosts No. 2 North Carolina at noon. Admission is free and the Wolverines will be available for autographs following the match.
