BATON ROUGE, La. -- The University of Michigan softball team came out on the losing end of a pitchers' duel in its final slate of the LSU Invitational, falling to No. 9 LSU, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 24) at Tiger Park.
LSU struck first in the contest, scoring on a one-out throwing error off a comebacker to the circle in the third inning, but Michigan responded to even the score with a suicide squeeze in the top of the fifth. Junior third baseman Madison Uden doubled to lead off the frame and advanced on a subsequent groundout before sliding in safely on a sac bunt off the bat of senior second baseman Faith Canfield.
Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the tie was short-lived as LSU got the run back in the home half of the fifth, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and a two-base wild pitch before using an RBI infield single -- despite a great defensive play by Canfield to keep the ball in the infield -- to retake the lead.
Freshman RHP Alex Storako (4-5) was solid in defeat, allowing two runs -- one earned -- off four hits and two walks and struck out six LSU batters through four innings. All three U-M pitchers appeared and combined for eight total strikeouts and six hits allowed.
For her part of the duel, LSU pitcher Shelbi Sunseri allowed one run off four hits and two walks and struck out two Wolverine batters.
Michigan (6-8) will head west next weekend for its annual appearance at the Judi Garman Classic, slated for Friday-Sunday, March 1-3, at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, California. U-M will kick off play with a noon PST slate against UCLA.
