BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Maggie MacNeil set the school record in winning the 50-yard freestyle and helped set another school record as part of the 400-yard medley relay to lead the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team on the second day of the Big Ten Championships on Thursday (Feb. 21) at Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines sit in second place (436.5 points), while Indiana leads (497 points).
"Breaking three school records in one night is pretty exciting," said head coach Mike Bottom. "Indiana is a good team, and we have our work cut out for us these next two days. Best thing we can do is come back tomorrow morning and give it all for Michigan."
MacNeil came into the meet having already made plenty of history in her first season and continued that on Thursday, winning the 50-yard freestyle and lowering her previously-held school record (21.65). She is the program's first Big Ten champion in the event since Kaitlyn Brady in 2006.
Senior Catie DeLoof finished second behind MacNeil and broke the 22-second barrier for the first time in her career (21.89), vaulting past older sister, Ali DeLoof, for second on the school's all-time list behind MacNeil. Sophomore Daria Pyshnenko was fourth in the heat (22.23), vastly improving her chances at qualifying for next month's NCAA Championships. Two others scored points: junior Vanessa Krause in 16th (22.97) and sophomore Claire Maiocco in 18th (23.00).

DeLoof, redshirt junior Miranda Tucker, MacNeil and senior Siobhán Haughey combined on a second-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay, lowering the school record (3:28.47). U-M got great splits from MacNeil on butterfly (49.86) and Haughey on freestyle (46.97), but couldn't overcome Indiana, who stormed out to close to a four-second lead at the halfway point.
The most exciting race of the night was the 200-yard IM where Haughey put up a school-record time in a runner-up performance (1:52.27). The two-time defending champion was neck-and-neck with Beata Nelson (Wisconsin) down the freestyle leg, but Nelson went a shade faster to secure the win. Still, Haughey chopped more than a second off her old school record of 1:53.48, set in December 2017. Her time Thursday was the fourth-fastest in the country this season. Tucker (12th, 1:57.45) and freshman Victoria Kwan (13th, 1:57.88) scored points in the consolation final.
Competition was fierce in the 500-yard freestyle, as the top seven seeds in the championship heat were separated by less than a second in preliminaries. Three of those spots belonged to Wolverines, led by senior Yirong Bi, who took third (4:37.63) in a tightly-packed final. Senior Becca Postoll cracked 4:40 from an outside lane to take sixth (4:39.99 -- a time that was well under the invited list to the NCAA Championships last year), while sophomore Sierra Schmidt was right behind in seventh (4:40.84).
Three divers scored points in the well, led by freshman Allie Klein, who made the consolation final and took 11th (296.30). Two others were in the bonus final: sophomores Nikki Canale in 19th (270.70) and Camryn McPherson in a tie for 21st (265.35).
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday (Feb. 22) at Counsilman Billinglsey Aquatic Center. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. with finals following at 6:30 p.m.
