CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan softball team could not hold on to a late lead at Louisville on the second day of action at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, falling to the Cardinals, 2-1, on Saturday (Feb. 16) at North Carolina's Anderson Stadium.
After rain and wet field conditions delayed the game's first pitch for more than four hours, both teams were sluggish at the plate to start, combining for just three hits over the first four innings. Michigan broke through in the top of the fifth inning, stringing together two hits and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases before freshman designated player Morgan Overaitis sent a first-pitch single up the middle for her second RBI of the weekend and fifth of the season.
Michigan held Louisville without a baserunner in the home half of the fifth, but the Cardinals rallied in the sixth, reaching on a one-out single and a walk before Megan Hensley sent an RBI single into center field and a subsequent error on the relay allowed the game-winning run to cross unearned.
Freshman Alex Storako (3-2) took the loss from the circle, allowing three hits and two free bases while striking out two through 5.1 innings pitched.
Michigan (4-4) will wrap up play at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge action Sunday (Feb. 17) with a 12:30 p.m. slate against host North Carolina at Anderson Stadium. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra as well as broadcast on WCBN Radio.
